Problem: Research reveals that five to 10 percent of all cancers are hereditary, one ninth of Russians have at least one life-threatening genetic mutation, 0.4 percent have mutations that lead to cardiovascular diseases, and between 0.5 to 5 percent have mutations that increase the risk of thrombosis.

Since DNA testing can determine risk for disease development, support children planning and provide insights on health, Health and Longevity® helps in disease prevention by screening for inherited pathologies, mutations and exome analysis.

Problem:  Sending money privately was not easy in Kenya. Whenever a person wanted to send money, especially, to remote rural areas, it was associated with travels to and from the bank to get a cash and a waiting period until he/she was free to travel and deliver money. Alternatively, one would choose to send neighbours or a public vehicle driver playing the route to take the cash to his parent. This risky method used to cost some money because the messengers often demanded tips.

Solution: M-Pesa (M for mobile, pesa is Swahili for money) is Africa's most successful mobile money service. It provides access to financial services to the millions of people who have a mobile phone, but do not have or have only limited access to a bank account. M-Pesa provides people with a safe, secure and affordable way to send and receive money, top-up airtime, make bill payments, receive salaries, get a short-term loan and much more.

Goals and objectives: M-Pesa aims to provide access to financial services to the millions of people who have a mobile phone.

Implementation: Established on 6th March 2007 by Vodafone's Kenyan associate, Safaricom, now M-Pesa has over 37 million active customers and almost 400,000 active agents operating across 7 countries: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique and Tanzania.

Customers register for the service at an authorised agent, often this is a small mobile phone store or retailer, and then deposit cash in exchange for electronic money which they can send to their family or friends throughout the country.

Once they have registered, all transactions are completed securely by entering a PIN number and both parties receive an SMS confirming the amount that has been transferred. The recipient, who does not have to use the same network, receives the electronic money in real-time and then redeems it for cash by visiting another agent, or spends it at an M-Pesa merchant.

M-Pesa significantly reduces the potential risks of street robbery, burglary and petty corruption within cash-based economies where only a small proportion of the population benefit from access to conventional financial services.

M-Pesa enables businesses of all sizes to collect payment from customers, make stock purchases and pay salaries to employees anywhere in the country, providing SMS notifications of every transaction for record keeping.

M-Pesa also helps governments to collect taxes and disburse social security payments, whilst enabling charities and non-government organizations to send money to thousands of beneficiaries at once.

Achievements: In 2019, 37 million active customers carried out over 11 billion transactions, averaging over 500 transactions every second.

Problem: Paucity in funding for agriculture, food insecurity and under-utilization of abundant arable land, increasing youth unemployment, aging farmer population, and difficulty in accessing a consistent supply of high quality traceable produce are one of the main problems in Sub-Saharan Africa’s economic landscape.

Solution: E-farms is an agriculture focused fintech that sources funds from farm investors (individual and corporate, using an online platform, so as to finance agricultural production and commodity trading, so as to unlock finance and access to markets for smallholder farmers.  We also train and empower young graduates looking to start a career in agriculture, but with neither skills and funds to do so. It's an agri-financing and agri-learning platform.

Goals and objectives: E-farms was founded to ensure that farmers have all the resources and finance required for optimal production by leveraging on pools of investment from investors passionate about the agricultural sector, but lacking the skills and time to execute effectively; and making same available to farmers, both active farmers, as well as potential graduate farmers, and connecting this to produce off-takers.

Implementation: eFarms (incorporated as FoodBank GrowMore Ltd) was founded by Nwachinemere Emeka and Akam Divine Love in November 29th 2017.

eFarms presents a preselect list of farms comprising of different crops and animals, chosen with careful consideration to demand, yield, Return of Investment (ROI), and Tenure of investment. These are divided into sub units corresponding to minimum investments for each farm. Thus, a maize farm may consist of 100 Acres of sub-farms, which may be in different locations. All farms are insured. To participate, a potential farm-investor would go through the platform, browse through all the farms with their corresponding GPS Coordinates, ROI, Expected Yield, Tenure of Investment displayed, read the FAQs, ask questions; then register, and select for funding the farm of their choice. During the tenure of investment, the farm-investor gets bi-weekly feedback in the form of videos, pictures, texts, and can book on-site farm visit if he chooses. At the end of the investment tenure, the Farm-Investor gets back his initial capital and his returns on investment varying for different crops and different tenures.

When a participant registers as either an active farmer, or graduate farmer, they are screened; only qualified farmers can participate or be on-boarded. Active farmers are assessed for crops they have experience growing, a feasibility study on the suitability of land they use for selected crop would be evaluated, and if matching, the farmer’s operation is funded. For the graduate farmers, they can only be on-boarded at the end of their training on crops selected. The funding of farmers comes in the form of provision of inputs needed for the quantity of crops chosen, and monthly stipends agreed upon. This measure is to ensure that funds are used for agreed upon purposes, as well as uniformity of produce, as the same seedlings would be provided to all farmers.

The active learner chooses what crop to follow and is able to learn across all our media platforms. She/he may later decide to begin his own farm, or work with eFarms. The produce off-takers also registers and keeps track of our produce and the harvest time; with the view to buying them once they are ready.

Achievements: To date, eFarms has connected over 748 investors, rasing over $500,000 in farm investments to finance 3,050 smallholder farmers working in 9 different agricultural value chains across 8 states of Nigeria.

eFarms won the 2017 CTA Pitch AgriHack competition held in Côte d’Ivoire. The Support from CTA enabled the company to hit the to meet and exceed the milestones they set in agreement with CTA, which included leasing and cultivating at least 100 Ha of land, finance 100 smallholder farmers across three locations in Nigeria and provide 200 ‘graduate farmers’ with on-farm training in their chosen field of interest, provide 50 ‘farm-ternships’ opportunities for students enrolled in higher institutions and raise at least ₦10 million ($20,000) from a minimum of 50 farm-investors. Efarms also won the FCMB Pitch Perfect Competition as the best e-savings platform in Nigeria, and was named top 50 innovative startups in Africa by the Jack Ma Foudations’ African Netpreneur initative, in 2019.

Problem: The improper disposal of rubber waste, including tires, poses a severe environmental challenge. In Egypt, despite nearly 140 million tonnes of solid waste produced annually, only half gets recycled. Tire fumes have been linked to Leukemia as well as other water and soil contamination problems.  

Solution: Mobikya is furniture made from upcycled tires with the conviction of solving global problems by transforming and processing used rubber into a valuable product.

 Goals and objectives: Mobikya aims to upcycle more tires, stop taking down trees in order to manufacture furniture and raising people’s awareness about green climate. 

Implementation: Mobikya was founded by “trash designer” Ibrahim A. Abougendy in old Cairo in 2016. He conjured up the idea in his final year studying architecture when he wanted to make sustainable furniture but lacked the financial resources to use unprocessed waste. He turned to tires, which exist in great abundance, often discarded in junk yards and landfills. He developed a unique quality control method for selecting tires suitable to work with. In order to ensure that tires are high quality, Mobikya increases their prices on a quarterly basis in order to incentivize the suppliers to keep the material up to par with the quality of the products.

Mobikya also employs locals including designers, photographers, and collectors.

Achievements: As of 2019, Mobikya has upcycled more than 1700 tires with zero emissions, 1000 washing machine drums and about 1500 Wooden Shipping boxes.

Problem:  By 2050, the global population is predicted to reach 10 billion, which implies growing demand for more food products. Given such prospects, the importance of agriculture monitoring is difficult to overlook.

Solution: Strider is a mobile application and a geo based big-data engine that reduces the usage of pesticides based on trustworthy/actionable information, better timing and precise dosages.

Goals and objectives: To bring technology and agriculture together, providing Ag Tech solutions that allow producers to make fast, quality, informed decisions resulting in higher productivity from their fields.

Implementation: Strider was developed by Strider, a Brazil-based ranch management startup in 2013. and installed in tablets; it allows technicians and field producers to register the exact incidents which may influence in the proliferation of plagues, resulting in a high level control, productivity and, mainly, up to 15% in pesticides cost savings.

The collection of information in the field is done with water- and fall-resistant collectors, with seven-inch touchscreens and equipped with a camera, GPS and an extra battery. The collector allows the technician to orient themselves on the farm through a map with GPS, facilitating the location of fields, areas affected by pests, points of action and traps.

The collector’s user interface is simple and requires few hours of training. The samples are always accompanied by photos that corroborate diagnoses. The collector works 100% offline. Then through a a WiFi connection, data is sent to precision analysis.

Strider company train a producer’s team and quickly bring you up to speed with the ease of use and application of the product. After just one day, the team is in position to begin to reap the benefits of the product and begin seeing it in action. Throughout the seasons, the company stays in touch with producers, follow up, and optimize the product to ensure to the best results.

Achievements: Strider has worked with Brazilian farmers for years integrating their decision-making platform into farms covering more than 1.8M acres in Brazil.  Now Strider has been utilized by more than 3,000 farms worldwide. From South America (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay) to North America (Mexico, USA) and all the way to Australia and Mozambique.

Problem: Gaza produces 6 tons of ashes every week which goes to landfills and as an unusable byproduct, it causes direct pollution to the ground water as it permeates quickly through soil particles-an environmental catastrophe. At the same time, importation of cement for construction comes at an unsustainable cost for the Palestinian economy.

Solution: GreenCake is the world's only brick that uses coal and wood ash as filler material instead of sand and aggregate. It is It is stronger than an ordinary brick, yet half the weight and price.

Goals and objectives: The solution aims to make Gaza less dependent on construction imports and help Gaza’s stalled reconstruction.

Implementation: Majd Mashhrawi, a civil Engineering graduate,  and her business partner Rawan Abdulatif conjured up the idea of GreenCake in 2015 to respond to the challenge of waste and a need for an alternative to cement bricks.

GreenCake hires young people to collect ashes from sources and reuses them to create blocks at a cost of 25% against a standard concrete bricks. A truck full of sand can cost around $200; the same amount of ash costs $25. The ashes are crushed, sieved, and then reused to make building blocks.

GreenCake participated in a start-up incubator called Mobaderoon III project, which trained the team on entrepreneurship, where the they established the prototype for GreenCake. They then participated in an MIT competition for Arab start-up projects, and it was selected as one of 70 (out of thousands of applications) semi-finalists. In 2016, Mashhrawi won first prize in Japan-Gaza Innovation Challenge.

The first construction using GreenCake took place in September 2016. The blocks were produced in a factory GreenCake rented for a week. Subsequently the success of GreenCake as a sustainable replacement continues to earn accolades, thanks to media interest in this venture, including a video that earned millions of views.

Achievements: So far, 100,000 GreenCake building blocks have been used to restore houses and factories.

Problem: With only 2-4 hours of electricity a day, Gaza’s electricity crisis affects more than 2 million residents, impeding economic activities, health, education and quality of life.

Solution: Sunbox kit is an affordable off-grid self-installable mini solar kit for families affected by Gaza’s rampant electricity cuts.

Goals and objectives: To provide consistent, affordable and reliable source of electricity for all Gaza residents.

 Implementation: Sunbox kit was created by Sunbox company founded in 2017 by Majd Mashharawi, a 24 year old civil engineer, after researching solar options in India and Africa, where electricity blackouts are common as well. The SunBox kits she imports and modifies is to be compatible with the local electrical outlets and voltage. She sells the product for $450, a price point compatible with the local economy. She partners with the Bank of Palestine and the Faten Organization for those opting to pay in installments. The system is sold in parts so that it is accessible to people of all income levels. Sunbox raised $60k in funding with which it was able to subsidize units at 50 percent. SunBox is also a youth job provider, and is currently staffed mostly by recent graduates.

SunBox runs fundraising campaigns to subsidize units at 50% of the cost. It is currently raising another round with a 50k goal to be able to reach more Gazans affected by electricity shortages.

Achievements: Sunbox has been able to provide solar systems to more than 800 families in Gaza. Sundox provides electricity for school children to do their homework, power entertainment equipment for those living in severe conditions in refugee camps as well as provide the electricity to run medical devices.

Problem: Despite exponential growth in Lima’s solid waste to about 8,468 tons of garbage generated daily, corresponding to 47% of the national total, Peru’s capital city only recycles 4% of its garbage, making it the city with the highest ecological footprint.

Solution: EcoTrash - The “Uber of trash”, provides a platform that connects users to recycling collectors where both parties benefit. It incentivizes clean environment by pinpointing to collectors places for collection and users in turn collect points on the app that can be redeemed with businesses assigned to the platform or as donations to charitable causes.

Goals and objectives: Incentivizing effective waste management and sustainability through recycling.

Implementation: Ecotrash was cofounded by Antonella Romero in 2013 who as a young entrepreneur  decided to use her extensive experience as an advisor to Peru’s Ministry for Innovation and Technology to address the issue of recycling in her county. She remembers that she was spurred to action when she saw a person dumpster diving in search of something profitable.  Other existing initiatives by NGOs and Government could not encourage citizens to recycle as much as a platform where users directly gain from recycling.  If there are people willing to collect recyclable waste, then it is just about giving citizens an incentive to put them in contact with collectors. “An informal collector earns around seven dollars per day (less than five euros) on a 12-hour workday looking for waste," Romero explains, and she states that those assigned to her platform earn double the money in half the amount of time.

On the EcoTrash platform, garbage collectors get an alert from the user to collect their trash. The user in turn accumulates points to exchange them on this platform. On the one hand the platform encourages citizens to recycle and makes it easier for them to do so and on the other hand, provides a better quality of life to the people who make a living collecting recyclable trash.

The service is free to users but it also offers a separate paid service to corporate clients. Another source of revenue is for EcoTrash to sell the products that are collected, essentially monetizing recycling as a business opportunity. EcoTrash currently hopes to expand to four additional regions and work directly with municipalities and governments.

 Achievements: The platform spurs decent job creation for collectors through technology. Women recyclers increase their income by 40% and reduce their workday from 12 hours to 8 hours. Founder and CTO of Sourtech, Hernan Roig, jury member of Innovators Under 35 Latin America 2018, considers EcoTrash to be  “solid project with both a social and an economic impact that contributes to society in two very important ways: it dignifies the work of the people dedicated to the collection of urban waste and it has a clear environmental impact."

Latest impact in numbers- 452,000 recycled plastic bottles, 23 200 Kilos of paper recovered,  9430 kilos of cardboard recovered.

Ecotrash currently operates in 17 districts of Lima city, has 18 corporate clients and 9 associated collectors. In the first quarter of 2019, they collected 27 tons.

Problem: Period poverty – global phenomenon affecting millions of women and girls whom lack access to safe and hygienic sanitary products and a conducive space to use them. This results in the inability of these women and girls to manage menstruation without shame or stigma, resulting in social exclusion and exacerbating inequality.

Solution: SunnyCotton is a social enterprise and a reusable menstrual pads provider with an innovative business model. Its production processes and materials are locally sourced, providing an eco-friendly, sustainable and cost effective option to a hygienic sanitary product for women and girls.

 Goals and objectives: To provide low-cost and sustainable sanitary pads by maximizing product efficiency and enhancing end-user experiences, empowering women and providing decent employment.

Implementation: SunnyCotton pads became commercially available in Thailand in early 2018. Its materials and production processes are locally sourced. By leveraging its own e-commerce platforms and its partners stores to distribute and merchandise its pads, SuttonCotton is able to provide cost-benefits to its users. Marketing and advertisements are conducted via social media and conventional mass media such as television, newspaper, magazines and at cloth pad hand-making workshops.

The reusable pads come in four different sizes: Panty liner (S), Regular (M), Heavy (L) and Night (XL). They have a lifeline of about 5-10 years depending on usage and maintenance. For a longer lifeline, it is advisable that users avoid using harsh detergents, ironing on high heat, intense rubbing and unwashed soiled pads kept for a long duration. The pads comes in a water resistance series are designed with a nylon lining to prevent downward leakages while the all cotton non-water resistance series are more breathable and dry quicker. The pads also come in an eco-friendly hemp series, durable with natural antibacterial properties made of hemp fabric.

SuttonCotton builds partnerships with diverse stakeholders, including national and international organisations, investors, research institutes, suppliers, governmental bodies, NGOs, other social and environmental enterprises.

Achievements: SunnyCotton provides $66 in annual cost savings to its customers. With each purchased pad, about 12-60 pieces of disposable pads are saved, contributing to waste reduction. SunnyCotton provides valuable jobs for village women who build on their traditional sewing and weaving skills. It also empowers women by providing valuable information on sustainable alternatives of feminine hygiene, helping to build their confidence and negate stigmas of isolation.

Problem: According to the WorldBank, around 50 million hectares of land in Nigeria is underutilized. Farmcrowdy responds to the increased need for food production to keep up with the needs of a growing population in Nigeria. 

Solution: Farmcrowdy is a free platform which links farm sponsors and farmers. It is a one-stop-shop that allows users to be alerted via notifications once a farm is open for sponsorship, allowing users to generate a profit while sponsoring a rural farmer.

Goals and objectives: To increase food production in Nigeria while promoting youth participation in the agriculture sector.

Implementation: Farmcrowdy was founded in 2016 by Onyeka Akumah as Nigeria’s first-ever digital agricultural platform linking farm sponsors with farmers to increase food production. Users could identify a farm of choice and sponsor as many units as they can afford. Followers also have the option to follow a farm that interests them, without paying for it. Farmcrowdy allows you to acquire relevant knowledge through updates, blog posts, and other agriculture-related information.

The company plans to continue expanding their reach in order to continue to empower local farmers, positively impact their lives and their families while boosting food production and sustainability in Nigeria.

Achievements: Since launching in 2016, Farmcrowdy has empowered over 25,000 small-scale farmers across Nigeria and it has been able to utilize over 16,000 acres of farmland, reached over 80,000 in farm sponsorships, reared over 2.8 million chickens and has over 50,000 farm followers. It has won numerous awards in recognition of the impact of this innovation.

Problem: Kenyan 14 million farmers are faced with farm productivity of only 30% and about $5 billion input loses due to uninformed farming decisions, poor usage of seeds, fertilizers and unprocessed data on environmental, soil and weather factors.

Solution: UjuziSensor is a sensor-based soil testing kit that establishes an everlasting information sharing session between farmers and the first ever consolidated database covering accurate data in the whole farming lifecycle and allows the farmer to have affordable access to precise, accurate, easy-to-understand and actionable farming and market information through their mobile phone.

Goals and objectives: UjuziSensor aims to increase productivity through precision insights, leveraging data analytics and artificial intelligence to enhance the efficiency of small holder farmers.

Implementation:  UjuziSensor is developed by UjuziKilimo founded in 2014 by 24-year-old Kenyan Brian Bosire, who was raised on a farm and was motivated by the struggles of his parents who dealt with the financial consequences of poor harvest each season after investing time and money. At the age of 19, Bosire invented a simple device for his mother to use, which would allow her to stick the device in the ground and immediately determine which crops could result in maximum yield, the amount of fertilizer needed and optimal seed varieties, so that to decrease the risk involved in the traditional approach to farming.

The device is cost effective, easy to use as testing process takes a field agent about five minutes to read the results and another two minutes for the results to be transmitted to the farmer. The device can assess data from about 10 acres of land. The device utilizes GPS for farm location, weather conditions and soil qualities. Based on the results, UjuziSensor provides advice on fertilizers, seeds and specific crop management to optimize harvest. Precision farming reduces the risk of using the wrong quantities and high cost on fertilizers, enhances soil conservation and increases productivity.

In 2017 10 young field agents were trained in sales, soil testing and other relevant agribusiness skills.

Achievements: UjuziSensor has brought real time farm data to Kenyan farmers, providing targeting services based on analytics resulting in $100 savings on fertilizer and a further $100 in extra income. The device optimizes input usage by 95% and productivity by 80%.

Problem: Despite a flourishing tourism industry in the Komodo Islands community, its fishing community is confronted with a multitude of challenges including scare fresh water supply, soaring temperatures and polluted fishing waters as a result of high plastic use.

Solution: Komodo Water is a social enterprise that provides access to clean water and sustainable water management by optimizing and managing the current local water resources, transforming various raw water conditions into fresh and safe drinking water based on an environment sustainable approach. Komodo Water provides water quality by employing suitable and reliable technologies to the serviced communities. The enterprise also provides a much needed additional income source for the local community operating ice makers and a water treatment facility.

Goals and objectives: To provide solar powered fresh water and ice solutions for fishing communities that increases economic output, while protecting the environment. Komodo Water’s ice last longer than normal ice packs, allowing fishermen to go fishing further from areas where they reside.

Implementation: Komodo Water is part of Tinamitra Mandiri Group of companies, established in 2010 with a focus on providing sustainable solutions to development challenges. It seeks to become a leading provider of clean energy and leading player in utilizing alternative and sustainable energy sources while providing sustainable community development initiatives.

Komodo Water employs efficient reverse osmosis machines and icemakers powered by solar technology. It purifies brackish water of TDS 9000 ppm into water with drinking quality of TDS 11-13 ppm certified by Indonesia’s National Health Department. Komodo Water produces and sells 5 tons of drinking water daily. It also makes ice blocks for fishermen, fish sellers, and tourist boats.

Beyond providing clean drinking water, Komodo Water also strives to advance human development of the entire community by supporting community empowerment, ensuring that the community is integrated in the economic value chain of its enterprise. It sponsors entrepreneurship program, community education, and other activities.

It also partners with other actors across the world and provides consultancy services franging rom geo-electrical survey, water drilling, water processing & technology and water business management.

Achievements: Komodo water has provided water security for 2,000+ families, reducing infant and children deaths caused by contaminated water. In addition, it has reduced plastic waste in the sea by 1,000 plastic packs per day and the switch to the use of clean solar energy has reduced diesel fuel consumption by 14,400 liters, avoiding the emission of 9,720kg of CO2.

The enterprise has empowered the community, by providing a lucrative mechanism they can participate in as new business opportunities for retailers and distributors of water and ice. This has earned an additional $ 98,000 annually for the fishermen of the community by improving their handling and transportation processes. The longer lasting ice blocks has led to sales increase of about 50% as the innovative cooling system ensures that the catches last fresher and longer.

It has also enhanced the skills of the community towards the maintenance of the machines and conducting community based development initiatives.

In recognition of its contributions, it has been shortlisted for the 2019 SEED Low Carbon Award for Clean Energy.
